Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (1 Cor. 15:1-4)

1. Acts 18:1 tells us the apostle Paul came to Corinth.
2. Paul began to talk about the Jesus in a “synagogue” (Acts 18:4).
3. Most of the Jews in this city did not want to hear what Paul had to say about the Lord (Acts 18:6).
4. Acts 18:11 says Paul spent 18 months – a year and a half in this community.

IN ONE OF THE LETTERS THAT WAS LATER WRITTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO BECAME CHRISTIANS IN THE CITY OF CORINTH, WE LEARN ABOUT WHAT PAUL PREACHED WHEN HE CAME TO THIS CITY.

a) 1 Cor. 15:1-4 – These verses have already been read, but let’s look at them again – READ
2) Paul sought to make 3 basic points during his initial teaching in this very corrupt city.
a) Paul said Jesus “died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (verse 3).
b) Then He said the Lord was “buried” and on the “third day” he was raised.
c) The death of Jesus is a subject that is found throughout the Bible.
d) In Gen. 3:15 God said a time would come when someone’s “heel” would be “bruised.
e) The crucifixion was compared to a heel being bruised.
3) In Ps. 22:1 we also find some familiar words: “My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?”
4) In Ps. 34:20 there is a statement about “no bones being broken” – this also looked forward to Jesus’ death.
5) In Ps. 69:21 the Old Testament spoke of someone being given “gall to drink.”
6) There is the familiar information in Isa. 53; Jesus was like a lamb led to slaughter and He opened not His mouth.
7) In Dan. 9:26 we are told the Messiah was to be “cut off” (He would suffer a violent and horrible death).
8) Zech. 13:1 describes a “fountain” that would be opened for “sin and uncleanness.”
a) In places like Mt. 16:21 the Lord told His disciples He had to go to the city of Jerusalem.
b) In Jn. 12:32 the Lord said He would be “lifted up” (the Lord knew He would die by crucifixion).
c) Joseph of Armathea (a rich man—Mt. 27:57) “went to Pilate” (Mt. 27:58) and asked for the Lord’s body.

11) After the stone was rolled away believers were told of the resurrection (Mt. 28:5-7 – READ).

APPLYING JESUS’ DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION TO OUR LIVES.

1) In Rom. 6:2 Paul used the word “death” – READ.
a) In Rom. 6:2 this “death” is identified as a “death to sin.”
b) Rom. 6:11 – this point is made once again – READ
c) Col. 3:3, another passage written by this same author to Christians, said: “for ye have died.”
2) The sins we read about in the Bible are things people to need to forsake – leave alone – abandon.
a) Rom. 6:4a – READ
b) Notice the words “buried” and “baptism.”
c) We also need to share in the likeness of Jesus’ burial and we do this by being baptized.
3) Acts 2:38; 22:16.
4) Rom. 6:4b – READ – Jesus was buried and then RAISED UP – He came from the grave.
5) 2 Cor. 5:17.
