How to have Christ at the center of your life

“Christ is the head of this house; The unseen guest at every meal.” Thus reads a plaque that hung on our dining room wall for years. When your relationships are built on Christ, they have a depth and a dimension they cannot have otherwise.

A Christ-centered relationship means that I am quick and anxious to forgive. Paul wrote in Colossians 3:13, “if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

A Christ-centered relationship means that I watch carefully what I say – how it comes across both in my words, my tone of voice, and my attitude. Again, Paul writes, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4:6).

A Christ-centered relationship means that I give sacrificially of myself to maintain the relationship. Specifically speaking of the husband-wife relationship, Paul writes to husbands, “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church” (Ephesians 5:29). To maintain a healthy, Christ-centered relationship, I need to give – my time, my energy, and my resources.

A Christ-centered relationship means that I humble myself and consider the other person as more important than myself. To the Christians in Philippi, Paul wrote, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:3-5).

Finally, a Christ-centered relationship means that I want the other person to go to heaven. Jesus came to give us the chance to go to heaven. If my relationship with others is a Christ-centered relationship, then I’ll do what I can to help that person go to heaven. Negatively, it means I will not do anything that will put a stumbling block in their way. Positively, it means I will teach that person what the Gospel says that they might obey it.

Next week, we will have a series of meetings, 7 P.M. each evening, on building Christ-centered relationships. The speaker for the evening will be Kevin Williams from Benton, KY. We invite you to be with us. On Sunday, we’ll have a potluck meal after morning worship. Please be our guest.
