Saved people are to be like salt

How does salt preserve food? It does so by taking water out of the food. Without the water in the food, bacteria cannot thrive. If bacteria cannot thrive, food cannot deteriate. The preserving effects of salt made it a hot commodity in ancient cultures, being used often as a barter.

In Leviticus 2:13, Moses refers to the “salt of the covenant” with God. He refers again to the “covenant of salt” in Numbers 18:19. The kingship of David over Israel was given to him by God by a “covanant of salt” (2 Chronicles 13:5).

In the New Testament, Christ’s disciples had been arguing over who was the greatest (Mark 9:33ff). In verse 35, Jesus told the men, “If you want to be first, you need to be last of all and the servant of all.” Shortly thereafter, the disciples were still complaining, this time about some teachers who were not a part of their group. The disciples were jealous, apparently.

This time, Jesus responded by telling them not to stop the man. Then, He tells them that any act of kindness on the part of someone following Jesus will be rewarded. Next, He tells them that they need to sever anything that is hindering them from being faithful to God.

Finally, Jesus says, “Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.” Pride and prejudce are bacteria in the lives of Christians. To expel these and to preserve our spiritual life, we need salt. We need the salt of an humble influence. That is useful. If our “salt”, however, has lost its ability to influence us for good, it’s not worthy anything. A Christian who is boastful and prejudiced is not valuable to God.

Let’s have salt in ourselves and peace with one another.
