The God Who Promises

How did Israel remain faithful to God during those years of silence from heaven, with no written record (so far as we know) of God’s dealings with the patriarchs?

The heart of God’s response to Moses is in 3:8 – “I have come down to deliver them.” It is worded slightly differently in verse 17 – “I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land…” We have here two events mentioned – the exodus and the settlement in Palestine. Both were part of God’s promise to Abraham.

There is no Hebrew word for “promise.” The English word appears 30 times in the ESV – compare 3:17. But it translates the normal Hebrew word for “saying” or “speaking.” The term which comes closest is the word “swear” or “make an oath”. We find this word in Exodus 13:5, 11; 32:13; 33:1.

PROMISES THAT WOULD HAVE STRENGTHENED THE ISRAELITES:
Genesis 12:1-3. How does God keep His promise to Abraham in the immediate context of chapter 12?

Genesis 15:18-21. Here, faith is introduced in a passage that is used frequently in the NT but “faith” is introduced in the context of God expecting man to believe God will keep His promises.

Genesis 17:1-8.

So, as we have seen (Exodus 1:7), Israel has grown to considerable numbers and Pharaoh tries to jeopardize those promises from Genesis (albeit unknowingly). The need for faith, trust, and patience continues on to this day.

Read again 3:6. Then verses 7-10. Notice that God identifying Himself as the “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” is followed immediately by the promise to give Israel the land of Canaan. The same thing is true in verses 15-16, then verse 17.

God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 17 is hinted at in 6:2-8. Notice the reference to the “covenant” in verse 4 and the “oath” in verse 8. We also have the promise of deliverance (verses 5-6) and the relationship between God and His people in verse 7. This promise of Israel being God’s people is fulfilled at Mount Sinai in Exodus 19 but Sinai is not the end of the promise, observe 19:5-6. What does it mean to be a “priestly kingdom” and a “holy nation”? Look at 1 Peter 2:4-10.

This promise of the “land” is reiterated several times in Exodus: 13:5, 11; 23:27-31; 33:1-3; 34:10ff. Joshua tells us that the promise was fulfilled – Joshua 23:14.

How does God’s promise / His faithfulness relate to us and our challenges today? Hebrews 10:23.

What are some of God’s promises that you hold dear?

Why is it so hard to trust God’s promises? Shouldn’t a study of Israel and the exodus help us trust God’s promises?
