The Greatest Passage on Grace

“Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that save a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I’m found.” Surely the Jews on the day of Pentecost sang that song (so to speak)! Peter, while preaching the first Gospel sermon, rebuked them so very sternly, telling them that they were guilty of crucifying God’s Son. Upon hearing this inspired condemnation, these folks were “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37). I wander exactly what went through their minds at that time? Surely they had an overwhelming feeling of doom.

Peter, however, does not leave them without hope. When they asked about what they should do, Peter responded: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins” (Acts 2:38). Is there any greater passage on grace than this one! They had the Savior’s blood dripping from their hands, and yet forgiveness was extended to them upon repentance and baptism! The blood they shed could be used to wash their sins away! (see Acts 22:16).

After they were baptized (and around 3000 were – Acts 2:41) surely they had not the slightest thought of having done something that merited salvation. They knew beyond any doubt that they were saved by the grace of Almighty God and the blood of His precious Son.

This same grace is available for mankind today. The fact that we have to do something to obtain that grace does not minimize it. The fact that we can do something about our sin is a testimony itself to God’s amazing grace.
