TODAY’S MATERIAL COMES FROM THE BOOK OF FIRST KINGS, A BOOK ABOUT SOLOMON.

a) 1 Kgs. 2:3 tells us David told Solomon to keep God’s laws so things would go well.
b) In 1 Kgs. 3 we read about Solomon’s request for wisdom and his judgment about a baby.
c) Chapters 5-6 of 1 Kgs. deal with building God’s temple; chapter 7 tells us about Solomon’s place.
d) The queen of Sheba came to see Solomon (1 Kgs. 10) and this chapter tells us about Solomon’s’ gold.
e) This king received about 25 tons a gold a year, 1 Kgs. 10:14.
f) As the text continues we learn that Solomon had many wives and this fact brings us to 1 Kgs. 11.
2) Towards the end of chapter 11 we read about a serious problem.
3) 1 Kgs. 11:29-33a – READ
a) God offered Jeroboam an incredible deal – he was promised ten tribes from the nation of Israel.
b) Verse 38 says if this man would abide by God’s will, God would bless him in numerous ways.
4) The events in 1 Kgs. 12 describe how God’s promise to Jeroboam came true.
5) 1 Kgs. 12:29 says Jeroboam set up idols at “Dan and Bethel.” 1 Kgs. 12:31.
a) Jeroboam devised his own religion.
b) He was not authorized to create this faith, but he did what he wanted.

IN OUR WORLD WE FIND PEOPLE DOING THINGS THEY ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO.
a) As we continue the story in 1 Kgs. 13, we find even more examples of unauthorized activity.

2) Men seem to be oblivious to the fact that the Bible also speaks about unauthorized activity.

JEROBOAM SHOWS US THAT WHEN IT COMES TO SPIRITUAL THINGS, AUTHORITY IS VERY IMPORTANT.

1) 1 Kgs. 13:8 – READ
2) This prophet said God had given him some very specific instructions.
3) God told this special servant to come to the area of Judah, but not eat or drink while he was there (verse 9).
4) In verse 11 we come to a new character; this new figure is called an “old prophet.”
a) The old prophet wanted to meet up with God’s servant who had confronted the king – verse 13 – READ
b) The old prophet then offered an invitation – verse 15 – READ

6) Verse 19 tells how the younger prophet went to this man’s house and “ate” food and had something to drink.
7) While these men were sitting at the table the old prophet got a revelation from God – verse 20.

9) Verse 24 tells how God’s servant didn’t make it back home; a lion met him and took his life.
10) People dismiss the need for book, chapter, and verse preaching, claiming God is a “loving God.”
11) Insisting on Bible authority for our beliefs and practices is often thought of as being “narrow minded.”
12) The end of this chapter takes us back to king Jeroboam.
13) Verse 33 says Jeroboam did not change his ways.
14) There will be people who will believe and do what God has not sanctioned.
15) 1 Kgs. 13 leaves no doubt that somehow disregarding God’s authority is classified as disobedience.
