“Lost: Wedding Memories”

If you ask Pam and Howard Waelder, Michael Hall is a hero. No, he didn’t save their lives or pay off their mortgage. Hall took wedding photos for the Sacramento, California couple.

The heroic aspect of Hall’s actions is that he heard of their dilemma and stepped forward to help. Pam and Howard were married a week earlier. Friends took photos of the wedding with a film camera, and the film was dropped off at a local Walgreens. One of the two rolls of film was lost, however. That qualifies for most of us as a crisis.

Hall, a professional photographer, heard of their plight (they had publicly asked anyone who might have gotten the photos by mistake to please return them). To help them recapture the magical moments of their wedding, he waived his normal fee for doing a wedding, and helped them to “make some lasting memories”.

My wife and I can understand the panic of lost wedding photos. Our photographer’s assistant had a tiff with him after our wedding, and took several boxes of wedding proofs home with her. It was about five months later when we finally got our album! For much of that time we weren’t sure we would ever have them.

But Walgreens can’t be blamed for all lost wedding memories. Many couples who still have their photos from their special day seem to have lost all memory of their vows.

God’s word teaches us to work hard to keep our marriages glowing. The wise man gave this counsel: “Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well. … Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth … always be enraptured with her love” (Proverbs 5:15,18,19).

Some, in an effort to scratch their “seven year itch”, turn to someone outside of their marriage relationship for comfort and pleasure. The Bible is clear: That’s wrong.

Paul gave the same admonition: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Peter speaks similarly: “Husbands, likewise, dwell with [your wives] with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered” (1 Peter 3:7).

Photos are optional, of course. Memories can be rekindled of that day when both wife and husband happily and willingly said “I do”. Open up that album and remind yourselves of the vow you made in the presence of God.

Come to the light God offers! Study His word, the Bible. Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24). Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
