Worcester v. Georgia.

Let the Supreme Court Enforce It

In 1832, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled on a case, Worcester v. Georgia. The case involved the state of Georgia seizing Cherokee indian land because gold was found on it. The seizure, ruled the justices, violated federal treaties. It is purported that President Andrew Jackson commented, “John Marshall [the chief justice] has made his decision, now let him enforce it.”

So it is that the Supreme Court has ruled that God made a mistake when He defined marriage as a relationship between men and women. Every state must recognize homosexual marriages. Now, let them enforce it.

First, let us emphasize that homosexuality is no more sinful than any other sin mankind commits against God. As to its repercussions on a national scale, that remains to be seen. Will it be more harmful to America’s families than the ungodly divorce rate?

Having said that, this Gospel preacher and this congregation will not support either homosexual marriages nor the homosexual lifestyle. We will continue to love the homosexual as we do the liar, the thief, or the swindler. But when God speaks, we listen and obey.

The Supreme Court’s ruling has now set the 14th amendment’s “equal protection clause” against the 1st amendment’s “freedom to exercise your religion” clause. Only God knows how this will work itself out in practice. Will the church lose its tax exempt status? Possibly. Will preachers be jailed? Not likely; but we will see.

But come what may, we cannot stop obeying God in order to please man (Galatians 1:10). When Jesus comes again, the Supreme Court’s ruling will mean nothing, but our eternal destination will hinge on whether we stayed faithful to Him.

Responding to the Court’s decision, Ryan Anderson of the Heritage Foundation suggested these three steps:
1. Recognize the Supreme Court’s decision is an illegitimate interpretation of the Constitution. Our Founding Fathers did not support homosexuality (see apologeticspress.org, “The Founders on Homosexuality”).
2. Support efforts to protect our freedom of speech and freedom to exercise our religion.
3. Redouble our efforts to make the case for marriage. That means we need to strengthen our own marriages and support Christ’s teachings on the sanctity, purpose, design, and beauty of marriage.
