Tom Motzel walked into his house and realized someone had earlier been there, someone who had not been invited in. But instead of finding his house in a shambles, he found it clean – cleaner than it had been in some time. The “intruder” even left a note giving Tom and his wife his phone number, but they’re not going to press charges.
Louis Angelino, age 27, has been cleaning houses for additional income. A friend had hired him, but Angelino wrote down an address that was off by one digit. Oddly the Motzels had left a house key under the front door mat, just as had been arranged by the owner of the house Angelino was hired to clean. It was only after the house was totally cleaned that Angelino realized he was in the wrong house! He left a note for the owners explaining what had happened along with his deepest apologies.
It was Beth Motzel who first called Angelino a “cleaning fairy”. Angelino has latched onto that label, and is now calling his cleaning business “The Cleaning Fairy”. We suspect he will not be aiming to enter the wrong houses, even though this incident turned out to be a positive experience.
In the Bible we read of an occasion when a house was “swept, and put in order” – but was this a good thing? Let’s consider this idea.
In Matthew 12:43-45 Jesus spoke of “an unclean spirit” (a demon) who had gone out of a man, a very good thing for that man without a doubt. But then the spirit returned to his “house”, and found it “empty, swept, and put in order”. The demon then brought “seven other spirits more wicked than himself” and they all made their abode in that man, “and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”
So was the problem that the man’s “house” (life) had been swept clean and put in order? No, that’s absolutely not the problem. The problem was that the demon found the man’s life “empty”. Just as nature abhors a vacuum, so a person’s life must never be left empty of good things. If that happens, evil is ready to move in.

Jesus gave this instruction to all of His followers in John 15:8: “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” A life that is bearing fruit for Christ is not empty, and the danger of evil moving in is made far less likely.
How do we bear this “fruit”? “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22,23). That’s a portrait of a beautiful life!
The Lord can clean “houses”; no fairies will be involved. But once our sins are washed away (see Acts 22:16), we must make sure to fill our house with the fruit of the Spirit.
