A Point of Reference

Picasso once asked his friend Rodin if he liked Picasso’s latest painting that was yet unsigned.

Rodin studied the painting from all directions and, only after careful deliberation answered Picasso. “Whatever else you do…. sign it. If you do that… we will know which way to hold it.”

I visit art galleries because I’m married to an artist. I do not gladly go to art galleries. I gladly accompany Rachel so she can enjoy an art gallery. I’ll stay as long as she wants. When we go, Rachel looks at various artistic aspects. I read the signs.

I have seen far too many paintings in prestigious art museums that I do not believe deserve the exposure. To me, throwing paint on a canvas is a waste of everything involved: time, paint, canvas, money. If there is no point of reference to understand the painting or the motivation of the artist, what purpose does it serve?

Many people live their lives without a point of reference. Their lives are very similar to paint splattered on a canvas: no rhyme or reason, no direction or message. Too many are just a mess and I don’t just mean drugs, alcohol, and sex. I mean lives that have no direction and no purpose.

God created us with a spirit so we could exist in His presence forever. If we can’t be perfect people, we can at least live with The Perfect Person. But, that gracious blessing is available only for those who want to be there. Thus, live with purpose. Life has meaning. What is it?

In the words of Solomon, it is to “fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). In the words of Jesus, our purpose is to “love God with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind” (Matt. 22:37-39) and to “love our neighbor as ourself.”

Those two passages are our point of reference for life, our North Star. We are born so we can have life, so we can live with God in heaven. You can’t live with God if you don’t exist. We live our lives showing God that we love Him supremely; we do that by fearing Him and keeping His commandments. We also love our neighbors as ourselves. All of life should be focused on those two big ideas. When we do that, it gives life meaning, substance, and direction.
