Today we continue our consideration of this important theme…
IMPURITY IN OUR WORLD
Something that concerns me a great deal about our culture is how immersed we are in images. Think about how that has changed with the advent of the internet and smart phone. For example, how many pictures of people has a thirteen year old seen? Likely several thousand. While this seems innocent enough, what is communicated through this onslaught of images? What norms become their norms? How does it affect their conscience concerning the way that others dress? How many scantily dressed individuals do you suppose the average thirteen year old has seen?
One problem we face is that during this process (this numbing to that which is immodest), God doesn’t just adapt His holiness and His standards. And, by the way, this principle can eat away at all of us not just those who are really young. So we need to be certain that we are immersed in the Word of God. It will help guide us and protect our conscience, while at the same time we limit our exposure to worldliness. This needs to be a topic of discussion in our families.
Now we need to give some attention to a great and yet quiet evil of our time referred to as pornography. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines this word as: “movies, pictures, magazines, etc., that show or describe naked people or sex in a very open and direct way in order to cause sexual excitement.” Perhaps it should be noted that many who have researched these matters have concluded that some clothes (a little of it) is more provocative than complete nudeness.

The internet has placed an extremely strong form of temptation (at least for many) right at the fingertips (so discreet and so accessible). This horrible industry is the epitome of unbridled lust. It is everything that purity and God is not. There is nothing innocent about it and there is never any justification for the Christian to engage in this kind of activity. The Christian who has gotten involved and hooked in this very addictive sin needs to repent because it is polluting or staining his or her soul (see 1 Pt. 2:11). The Christian has pledged himself and his heart to God! Listen to Paul’s reasoning in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Christians do not glorify God with the use of their eyes and mind engaged in such pursuits. In fact, in a sense it is an encouragement for those folks on the other side of the screen to continue in those activities. There is no place for such unholiness to live within Christians who were bought with the blood of Jesus and who have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. We are called to holiness.
Young ladies and women, some of you have a difficult time understanding some of these issues regarding lust and purity. Males and females are wired differently. God designed us that way. And it is also true that we are simply different one individual to the next. But ladies you need to understand the magnitude of the temptation that many males have in this area. You need to know so that you will not unknowingly be a hindrance to some brother in Christ, or anyone else for that matter, in the way you dress. No, they cannot say, “It’s her fault, she should not have dressed that way.” But the Christian that truly loves God and loves their brother, will certainly not want to have any part in causing him to stumble. Wouldn’t it be horrific if our manner of dress led a precious soul to be lost eternally? Christ calls on us to be selfless and to be concerned about souls and our influence upon them. We want to encourage one another in righteousness and help each other get to heaven. Eternity is getting closer and closer for all of us!
