“Live, Not to Exist”
Michelle and I went to the movies earlier this week. At the end of the movie, one character shared a quote from author Jack London. It says, “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”
How are you using your time? Who are you spending your life with? What are you spending your life doing? What if we exchanged the idea of “spending time” with “spending life”? For example, 30 minutes of our time is actually 30 minutes of our life. Would we spend our time/life differently with that perspective? Life is more than trying to extend our life. Life is more than just breathing in and out. It’s more than waking up and sleeping. It’s more than your hobbies. It’s more than your diet. It’s more than your exercise regimen. It’s more than your golf handicap. It’s more than your 401K. Life is more than existence. Life is to be lived.
Out of many herbal tea choices, ginseng panaxis generic levitra quite popular. Vaginismus is when muscles viagra on line pharma-bi.com in and around vagina go into spasm, making sexual intercourse difficult and sometimes impossible. If your life is merely existence, then the end is inevitable. Death is defeat. Death is the end. It’s ultimately a loss. It’s playing a game that only has a losing outcome. But living your life and living it for the right purpose is what changes death to victory.
In Philippians 1:20-21 Paul, facing the prospect of death, proclaims, “Now, as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Paul understands his purpose in life is to glorify God. As long as he is breathing, he is meant to do more than simply exist. He is meant to exalt God. He does that by living a life that reflects Christ (Eph. 4:24). He does that by dying to himself daily (1 Cor. 15:31). He does that by sharing the good news with others (Rom. 1:16). We are meant for the same. And like Paul, provided we live rather than simply exist, we are destined not for the loss that comes with death, but for victory. Death is gain when a life is lived for Christ.
If I might expand Mr. London’s thought on life; The proper function of man is to live for Christ…And I shall use my time accordingly. Will you?
