“The Mark Of The Master”

Michelangelo was a Renaissance man.  He lived in the 16th century when the Italian Renaissance was at its peak.  Among his many skills was sculpting.  His best known work, “David”, is an amazing specimen, though a modest person will blush to look at it.

There was a buzz recently at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London when workers examined a wax model of one of Michelangelo’s statues, “The Slave”.  The wax model was prepared before the sculptor began working with marble, a work that was never completed.  As the model was undergoing scrutiny, a fingerprint was found in an inconspicuous spot.  It is believed to be the fingerprint of Michelangelo.

There has never been doubt about who sculpted the figure or its wax model.  But, as one official with the museum said, “A fingerprint would be a direct connection with the artist.”  It’s the sort of find that curators and historians get excited about.

May I suggest that each of us do a little investigation of our own – of our own physical bodies?  Those who take up the challenge will discover something like a fingerprint pointing to the One who designed us.  We’re speaking, of course, about God.

Many in the world laugh at such an idea.  “God?  What an antiquated idea!” they may retort.  The empirical mind has to see, feel, hear, smell, or taste something before it believes something is real.  But there is so much that transcends the material realm, like love, thinking, compassion, altruism, etc.  You can’t examine such things in a lab, but they are absolutely real.

David spent time meditating on the marvel of his body.  In Psalm 139:13,14 he wrote, “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.  I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”

You don’t have to read far in the Bible to understand why our bodies are so amazing: “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27).  God’s “fingerprints” are all over us!

Augustine summed up the principle well: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”  Have you made your direct connection with your Designer?

Come to the light God offers!  Study His word, the Bible.  Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).  Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
