WHAT ABOUT OBEDIENCE?

“Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

That’s a familiar line in a hymn we often sing. And it’s one that we should pay attention to. There are so many in our world who emphasize trust in Jesus, and that’s true. Without trust in him we are without hope. The word trust actually means “to put your full weight on” and has a significant meaning for the Christian who trusts. It means, as we sing in another hymn, “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling.”

Our salvation by the grace of God is not dependent on anything I do (Ephesians 2:8-10). If we understand that, then the matter of trust is a matter of faith. And the object of our faith is the person of Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:1-2)

But then there is the matter of our obedience. Listen to Paul in Romans 16:25-27 (ESV)

Amen.”

James (the brother of our Lord) wrote (James 2:19-20)“19  You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20  Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works (obedience) is useless?” That’s why he previously declared that faith without works is dead (vv. 17-18)

Sure we can see that obedience is a necessary part of the Christian life because it is an expression of my faith, not any earning power of what I do. “Trust and obey” is simply another way of saying that I have FAITH in Jesus. Without it I would do nothing
