What to say at a funeral?

Posted on February 28, 2013 by howtobesaved@abiblecommentary.com

Last week, a brother in Christ – and a fellow preacher – crossed over into Paradise to be with the Lord. Frank Wade was well-spoken of by everyone who knew him. I did not know him; I only met him a few times. His daughter is the wife of one of my elders. Frank lived half an hour away, worshiping at another congregation.

Brother Wade loved the Word and loved to see people saved. He left this life at age 95. As he lay in the coffin, a Bible was opened, placed near his hands. On the way home, Jewell commented on that fact. “He held in his death what he had always held in his life.”

What will be said at your funeral? What will your family feel compelled to put in your coffin with you? My siblings use to joke about my dad that we would put a coffee pot in one hand and his Bible in the other and a handkerchief in there somewhere!

What do your children see you doing so much that it leaves a deep impression on their minds? How do you talk with your children, in front of your children, around your children? Does God’s Word flow through your conversations with others? Are God’s sentiments on the tip of your tongue? Have you hidden his Word in your heart?

Do you consume the Word of God as He told Ezekiel (3:1-4) and John (Revelation 10:9-10) to do? If you do, it will come out in your behavior and in your speech. It can not be true otherwise.

What do you have in your hands now? It’s what your children will put into your hands in the coffin – if only in their minds and hearts. What will it be
