WHY DID THE ETHIOPIAN REJOICE?

The scene of the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch, recorded in Acts 8:26-39, is beautiful beyond words. It has been re-enacted many times. Every time a person obeys the gospel of Christ the scene is acted out again, with the same beauty and the same results. In verse 39, we learn that the preacher and the Eunuch came up out of the water and the Eunuch “went on his way rejoicing.” Every time a person is baptized into Christ there is rejoicing. Why did the Ethiopian rejoice?

He went on his way rejoicing because He Was Pardoned. SIN is the only thing that can separate one from God. “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezek. 18:4. “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23). But now God’s pardon is offered to all. “And you did he make alive…made us alive together with Christ.” (Eph. 2;1, 5). This is exactly what happens when a penitent believer is baptized. (Mark. 16:16; Acts 2:38). Baptism puts a person into Christ (Gal. 3:27), and in Christ is where all spiritual blessings are found. (Eph. 1:3).

The Eunuch went on his way rejoicing became he was relieved of the burden of his sins.  He went on his way rejoicing because He Had Learned And Obeyed! “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, coeth unto me.” (John 6:45). We know of his desire to learn because he was reading from God’s Word. (Acts 8:28) His desire was that someone would help him understand. “And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.” (v. 29). He was reading from Isaiah 53, “And Philip opened his mouth and beginnig from this scripture, preached unto him Jesus.”  The Ethiopian Eunuch rejoiced in a new found freedom, he had learned and obeyed.

He went on his way rejoicing because He Had Begun A New Life! He had heard he message, Philip preached unto him Jesus. He confessed his faith, “And he answered and said I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” The Eunuch continued his obedience, “…and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.” When he came up out of the water he went on his way rejoicing. How marvelous it is for the child of God to know that the old man of sin has been crucified and we have started our lives all over again, fresh and clean! (Romans 6:3-4). He went on his way rejoicing because He Has A New Fellowship. “Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are .” (I John 3:1). He was now a child of God and a “joint-heir” with Christ.” (Rom. 8:17).

He went on his way rejoicing because of the assurance of a mansion in heaven with both Christ and the Father (John 14:1-3).

He went on his way rejoicing because He Could Tell Others The Good News! Good news is something we all like to tell, that there is no news to tell that is so wonderful as the Good news of Christ. I can imagine that the Ethiopian Eunuch could hardly wait to share the gospel with his friends and neighbors.

INDEED HE “WENT ON HIS WAY REJOICING.”
