A heart like flint

The Key to Hearing God – Isaiah 50:4-9

Flint, MI is named for the Flint River, whose bed is composed, or at least one time was composed of flint rocks. Flint is a sedimentary rock, a form of quartz and is very hard, very resistant to weathering. Because flint is so durable, it has been used in construction in areas where flint is very prominent.

The Bible pictures a heart like flint that is hard and durable when it comes to obeying the word of God. The heart that is pictured is none other than the heart of Jesus Christ and the passage is found in Isaiah 50.

Let’s read 50:4-5 specifically: “The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not disobedient Nor did I turn back.”

The Servant’s strength was that He had the “tongue” of a disciple and He taught what the Lord wanted Him to teach. Not only that, but He did what the Lord wanted Him to do. He was obedient.

Here is the strength to hearing God: humble obedience. We have pictured the Servant who learns and then teaches and obeys. The Hebrew word for “hear” is also translated often as “obey” – as we see in 1:10 (“hear/listen”; all major translations) and 1:19 (“obey”). That’s how close the concepts are. If you hear, you obey. If you’re not obeying, it’s because you don’t hear.

God authorized Israel through:
1. Direct commands – Deuteronomy 6:13.
2. Warnings not to add to His commands – Deuteronomy 4:2.
3. Statements showing that silence was prohibitive – Jeremiah 19:5. If there is no word of it, there is no authority for it.

JESUS IS THE SERVANT WHO SHOWS US THE WAY:
Jesus is the Servant who shows us the way to honor and glorify the Father through obedience.

Jesus obeyed His Father in everything – doing what God says do, the way God says do it, for the reason God says do it! The key to hearing God’s voice is to obey what He says.

Jesus did that very thing – John 5:30; 8:28-29; 10:17-18; 12:49; 14:10.

Do not let people deceive you into believing that certain matters are not a “salvation” issue. Anything is a salvation issue if it is an “obedience issue.” In other words, if God has spoken on a matter, then He authorizes what He authorizes. Silence is prohibitive.

Obedience is an indication of an humble and submissive heart. What the Lord says – how the Lord says and for the reason the Lord says.

Isaiah’s challenge to us, today, is to obey God as closely as Jesus obeyed Him.
