Bad company corrupts good morals

Yesterday, I related what happened on last Saturday when we camped in western Kentucky. We camped in a dome tent with a canopy tent over the picnic table. We staked them all down with stakes so that the wind would not blow things over. The wind was gusting at around 25 mph most of the day Saturday and in to the night. In fact, Monday on the way home, we learned that a tornado had touched down and was on the ground for a couple miles in Mayfield, KY.

I related yesterday how we drove eight stakes down for the canopy and then a couple in the dome tent. These stakes held throughout the day on Saturday and throughout the night. Early Sunday morning, I was awakened around 5:00 AM to the sound on rain on the tent. James Dobson says if you want to grow closer to your family, go camping in the rain! I was aggravated that the rain was not in the forecast. However, we had been warned on Saturday by a fellow camper and put everything under cover that could be damaged by the rain.

Around 8:00 AM, in the rain, we packed up our “church” clothes and went to friends of ours – Kevin & Lyn Williams – to cook our breakfast and attend worship with them. We enjoyed their Friends Day and the subsequent fellowship meal. The Walnut Grove congregation sponsored us in Romania and we enjoyed our visit with them.

Following their afternoon worship, we returned to our campsite. The stakes held the tents down for about twenty-four hours. But when we returned to the campsite, both tents were blown over. Enough stakes came out of the ground that the tents could not stand anymore. The rain had soaked the ground enough that the stakes could not stay firm and they were pulled out by the wind.

It does not matter how strong your spiritual defenses are – if you play with spiritual fire, you will be burned. You cannot play around temptation without losing the Devil’s game. Delilah “pressed Samson daily” and weakened his stakes (Judges 16:16). His soil got muddy and his spiritual defenses weakened and his life came crashing in. What do you do when you feel your soil getting muddy?

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.'” Don’t think you are stronger than Paul and bad company will not have an impact on you. The devil will soften your soil in order to loosen your stakes. He’ll do to you and me what he did to Samson.

When Potiphar’s wife tried the same thing on Joseph, he pulled up his stakes and reset them in firmer soil – Genesis 39.

Let us follow his example.
