Bible promises about the land of Israel

To Canaan’s Land

God had promised Abraham the land of Canaan in Genesis. In Genesis 17:8, God promised to give Abraham the land of Canaan – to him and his family. Abraham dwelt in the land of Canaan; Isaac dwelt in the land of Canaan; Jacob dwelt in the land of Canaan. But they never owned it.

Jacob’s family left Canaan when the famine struck. Thankfully, Jacob’s son, Joseph, was Prime Minister in Egypt and he knew the famine was coming. He stored up grain for seven years in order to prepare. So, Jacob and his family – some 70 people in all – migrated from Canaan down to Egypt. Little did they know that their family would not return for some 400 years.

There arose a pharaoh over Egypt who did not know Joseph and did not know what Joseph had done to enrich the earlier pharaoh nor save Egypt. He got scared of the Israelites and turned them into slaves.  Moses tried to save Israel but it was not the right time, in the right way and Moses fled into the wilderness of Midian.

But God appeared to Moses and told him, “I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners” (Exo. 6:4). That promise of God had still been alive, even if the Israelites’ hopes had died because of the slavery. God’s promises never die. He promised them He would give them that land and now He appeared to Moses with the message, “It’s time to fulfill my promise.”

After 40 years wandering in the wilderness, God gave the Israelies the land of Canaan under Joshua. The people could finally dwell in the land, in rest, if they continued to obey God.

Canaan is not mentioned in the New Testament except twice in a sermon in the book of Acts. However, the rest that the Jews anticipated in Canaan is spiritualized by the writer of Hebrews in chapter 4 (eight times) – verses 1, 3, 5, 8-11.

Now, with that background in mind – clearly the author of this song, William Golden, intended – this song to picture our promised land, our land “flowing with milk and honey” – heaven. Let’s sing the song and mediate on his thoughts…

ROSE
A rose is blooming there for me. My own rose? It’s personal. Listen to Jesus’ words again from John 14:2-3.

LOVE LIGHT
Beams across the foam – directing my way there. Jesus is on the other side, beckoning us to join Him. He has already arrived – Hebrews 6:20.
It shines to light the shores of home. Jesus is our Lighthouse, showing us the way.

SLEEP
My life will end in deathless sleep. Once we close our eyes for the last time, we’ll open them to eternity. The angel will come and take our hand, just as he did to Lazarus, and lead us to the bosom of Abraham. We’ll never again know what physical limitations are; we’ll no longer have physical pain…
And everlasting joys I’ll reap.

I’M ON MY WAY
To that fair land,
Where there will be no parting hand… Once there, there will be no coming back. We won’t want to return here.
