We have a salad dressing that has inscribed on its label “The heavenly flavor.” Now why do you suppose that God uses dressing on His salad? At one time, my “heavenly flavor” would have been Ranch. The word “flavor” is not in the Bible. But the word “aroma” is. It is found 42 times in the English Standard Version. It is used most often in Leviticus and Numbers. The first time is in Genesis 8:21 when God smelled the “pleasing aroma” of Noah’s sacrifice and said He would not curse the ground again.
That is the use of “aroma” in the books of Leviticus and Numbers. When man offers a sacrifice to God according to His instructions, that sacrifice is a “pleasing aroma” to the Lord. I don’t think it is because God loves roasted lamb. It is a pleasing “aroma” because the sacrifices were acts of faithful obedience on man’s part. That’s what finds favor in God’s eyes.
Mark Rooker in his commentary on Leviticus says this is an “archaic expression describing satisfaction with the offering. …Hence, prescribed worship is to bring pleasure to God” (90). Clyde Woods and Justin Rogers, in their commentary on Leviticus and Numbers concur. This phrase suggests an obedient sacrifice “to convey the idea that the sincere sacrifices of his people pleased the Lord just as sweet odors please men” (45).
