Christ is the door to salvation

President George H. W. Bush led an international coalition against Sadam Hussein in the early 90s. Hussein had invaded Kuwait. The world came together as it rarely does and supported military action against the Arabic dictator. In three months, the U. S.-led forces were successful.

To show his gratitude, the leader of Kuwait gave President Bush a door to his house. Not the typical key to the city. This wasn’t even the key to his house. It was the door to his house!

Inscribed on the door were words to this effect: “When a man gives you the key to his house, it means you are one of his best friends. When a man gives you the door, it means you are one of his family.”

I certainly do not know the origin of this Arabic proverb. But consider the spiritual application. In John 10:9, Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”

God gave us His door because He wants us to be in His family. There is only one way to stand in the presence of God. It is to go through the door. Jesus is that door. He is the entrance into heaven.

In John 14:6, after Jesus stated that He was the Way, He says, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” Nobody will be saved if they haven’t obeyed Jesus.

So God gave us His Door so that we might be His family. One passage in the New Testament pictures us as family through Christ. That would be Ephesians 3:15. However, many passages picture Christians as sons or daughters of God through Jesus Christ.

God did not give us His Door because we are His family – as the leader of Kuwait did President Bush. God gave us His Door to make us His family.
