Do aliens exist?

We have touched on alien life in our Tuesday Daily Droplets, stimulated by the new movie Prometheus. There are numerous movies and television programs centered around the possibility of aliens “out there.” S.E.T.I. is Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Tax dollars have been spent – or better said, wasted – on such. I, for one, believe it is a waste for I am convinced, based on biblical theology, that there are no alien life forms. Consider…

God created man as a moral being. “Moral” means “relating to, dealing with, or capable of making the distinction between right and wrong in conduct” (Webster). We often say man is a “free” moral agent but “free” connected with “moral” is redundant. If we are moral, then we are free. Free to make a choice between right and wrong.

The whole essence of the Bible’s view of man – biblical anthropology – is that man is capable of choosing between right and wrong. That man can choose the right. But, due to his limitations, he frequently chooses the wrong.

When man chose wrong, it necessitated the death of Christ. Could there have been any other way? To atone for man’s sins, could there have been any other act done by the God of heaven? Is there one other, single, solitary option that the Sovereign Ruler of the Universe could have done in place of killing His only unique Son? Clearly there is not. Nothing else would have accomplished the reconciliation of mankind with God except for the substitutionary death of the Son of God.

If you put those two points together, it seems to me, you end with the conviction that human beings are alone in the universe, among God’s physical, sentient beings. If God had created Martians, He would have created them as moral beings. As moral beings, they would have – like man – violated their relationship with God. They would have sinned. Since they would have sinned, they would need the Savior – Jesus Christ. The end result would be Jesus “globe” trotting, going from planet to planet dying for each and every race created by God. Do you believe God would have His Son do that?

Since God is perfect in all His attributes, His plan for saving man, revealed in the Bible, is the perfect plan. It could not be improved. It would have to be replicated to save some other being. There would have to be a nation which would produce the “Seed.” There would have to be sacrifices and institutions and a priesthood and monarchy, all to portray and picture and prophesy the Messiah. There would have to be prophets to foretell the coming of the Savior.

There would have to be a forerunner, a Martian “John the Baptist.” There would have to be religious institutions which Jesus would fulfill. This whole plan would have to be replicated over and over again throughout the universe. There would have to be a Bible in every culture. There would have to be “Christianity” in every culture. If no one could be saved on this planet outside of Jesus Christ, there could be no one saved in any planet outside of Jesus Christ. There would have to be the church of Christ in every alien race.

No. We are unique. “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:3-5).

There is one God. One Savior. One Church. One Bible. One sentient being created in the image of God. Period. Humans are special.
