Each one is responsible for his own salvation

You recall that Harry S. Truman had a plaque on his desk that said: “The Buck Stops Here.” Forty-seven years ago, the Trumans had a home in Kansas City, MO. They received a newspaper, the Kansas City Independent Examiner. At some point, the Trumans did not pay their mail carrier, George Lund.

But recently, the Harry S. Truman Library Institute found the bill. It was $7.50. They paid the bill owed to 80-year-old Lund. With six decades of interest. I wonder if Mr. Lund ever tried to get the $7.50 out of the ex-President. Did he just accept the non-payment as a part of life? C’est la vie?

What this illustrates to us is that a bill due is always due until it is paid or forgiven. Sin is a debt. Jesus told us to pray: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12). We owe God obedience. When we fail to obey, we incur debt. That debt is always due until it is paid or forgiven.

The Bible teaches that debt is forgiven in Jesus Christ. Listen to Paul: “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Notice Paul’s words: “not counting their trespasses against them”. That word “counting” is an accounting term. It means God does not look at us as sinners, if we are in Christ. He does not see our sin. He sees the blood of Christ.

The debt has been paid. We only need the forgiveness available in Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38).
