For we walk by faith, not by sight–2 Corinthians 5:7

Growing up, I never spent much time around rivers, lakes or swimming pools so I never learned to swim. Shortly after turning 18 years of age, I enlisted in the Navy and was assured by the recruiter that the Navy would teach me to swim so it is off to boot camp. Turns out that there were several of us who needed to learn to swim and for about three weeks we spent our time in the shallow end of the pool with just a little instruction. Then one day the instructor took us to the deep end and said “jump in”. I still could not swim so believe me when I say that it took all the courage I could muster up to take that leap, trusting that the instructor would not let me drown. As I think about this today, in many ways my faith in God is very similar. My fear of the unknown is replaced with a trusting faith in God. Because of my faith in God I can accomplish things I never thought I could accomplish (Phil. 4:13). Because of my faith in God I can see the eternal purpose of God in all things (Rom. 8:28). It is my faith in God that can and will sustain me when burdens and trials oppress and it is my faith in God that enables me to give him honor and glory when I am prospering.

Faith in God is the power that motivates our entire being. Faith in God is the foundation of our hope (Heb. 11:1, 6). It is our faith in God that enables us to overcome the world (1 John 5:4-5). The writer of Hebrews tells us that hope is the anchor of our soul and that it is both sure and steadfast (Heb. 6:19). The strength of that anchor lies entirely in the kind of faith we have in God. Without a strong conviction and trust in God there will be no hope and if there is no hope, there will be no anchor and if there is no anchor then we will drift aimlessly through life and one die unprepared to meet God in judgement. We are living in a society that is being consumed by the deplorable sins spoken of in Romans 1:18-32. It is a society that is aptly described in 2 Timothy 3:1-5. God’s law of marriage is scorned, ridiculed and rejected even to the point of accepting and promoting same sex marriage (Matthew 19:4-9). Friendship with the world has for countless numbers of people become a way of life (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).  Hence, our need for a strong, firm, unmovable faith in God that will keep us from faltering and enable us to one day gain the greatest victory imaginable (1 Corinthians 15:51-57)
