He that believeth shall be saved

We currently have 20 neighbors enrolled in a correspondence course. We utilize several, one published by House to House / Heart to Heart; one, by Gospel Services. A student recently sent in lesson #4 of the Gospel Services series: “God’s Plan for Redeeming Man.”

I graded the questions. One question, True/False, says: Jesus said, “He that believeth shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). The student marked “True.” Probably the “pastor” where this individual worships teaches that very thing. He probably preaches it very effectively. Unfortunately, if the individual would read the whole verse, Jesus actually said more than that. He actually said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” The devil loves it when people leave out commands of Jesus.

Denominations reject the idea that immersion is the point at which forgiveness of sins is received for a historical reason. Protestantism reacted to the Catholic church’s emphasis on salvation by works. When they reacted – Martin Luther and John Calvin are the most prominent Protestant leaders – they swung to the other end of the spectrum.

It is true that we do not earn or deserve our salvation. It is not true that salvation comes without acts of obedience on our part. We are saved “by grace, through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). Grace is God’s part; faith is man’s part. But it is not faith only (see James 2:24).

Peter said in Acts 10:25 that a man is welcome to God who “does what is right.” What is right is not what man defines as what it is right. It’s what God defines as what is right.

God clearly says that baptism in water is the moment when we are immersed into the death of Christ (Romans 6:3-4). God clearly says that baptism in water is the moment when we are made one with each other (1 Corinthians 12:13). God clearly says that baptism in water is when we become children of God and put on Christ (Galatians 3:26-27). God clearly says that baptism in water is the moment when we are sanctified and cleansed (Ephesians 5:26). God clearly says that baptism in water is when our hearts are circumcised (Colossians 2:11-12). God clearly says that baptism in water is when our consciences are cleansed (Hebrews 10:22). God clearly says that baptism in water saves us (1 Peter 3:21). Don’t take my word for it. Read the whole verse.

If you worship somewhere and the preacher does not teach what the Bible teaches, take him aside and instruct him in the way of God. If he will not listen, you would be better off going somewhere else.
