How to convert people to Christ

Adam is not a leader in the church. At least not a deacon or an elder. He served for years congregating the men who served in worship on Sunday mornings. He is a mechanic and, after having talked with him on a number of occasions, an expert at what he does. But at worship, he is quiet and unassuming. He is an introvert.

Adam has a lovely wife, Jennifer, who is an architect. She is a Bible class teacher and much more likely to make comments in class than is Adam. Together, they have two beautiful little girls, Emma and Lily. Adam is an ordinary Christian. If you can use “ordinary” to describe a servant of God.

But this past Sunday, Adam did something extraordinary. Let me back up a bit. We have had a young man visiting worship services with us for the last couple of months. One of our elders invited him to visit worship – not unusual for this elder. The visitor is married and they are expecting their first child in the next few months.

What this “ordinary” Christian did this past Sunday that was extraordinary is that he talked with this visitor. For quite a while.

If this visitor ever becomes a member of the church, it will be due partly to Russell’s initial invitation and, among other things, partly due to Adam showing interest in him. Is it possible to over-emphasize the importance of “regular” Christians greeting and meeting visitors to worship services?

Folks change religions, leave old religions and join new religions, when the social tie to a new religion becomes stronger than the social tie to the old religion. Visitors kind of expect the leadership – preachers, elders, deacons – to greet and meet. They need to do it. When “ordinary” Christians do it, however, it makes a huge impact. It shows them that the new church/religion is neither scary nor intimidating.

Adam helped make the visitor feel welcome. He indicated that the visitor is special and he was glad to have him here. Adam is not the only one here who does that. It’s part of the reason why the Paris church of Christ is known in this community for its friendliness.

Adam may be “ordinary” but he did an extraordinary act of service for his Savior. Jesus was a “friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matthew 11:19). I’m sure He met and greeted strangers who walked up and joined His Bible studies.

In what way are you exhibiting extraordinary service?
