Leviticus 19:16

Gutter Mouth

In 1972, a journalist fresh out of school found a job with a weekly newspaper in Richmond, VA, where he landed an assignment, covering a conservative Congressman challenging an incumbent. In order to discredit the Congressman, the young journalist interviewed members of his staff, without seeking any facts behind it.

The piece was ideological to the core. He was elected despite the hollow charges but a year later, the young journalist again set his sights on this Congressman. This time he was dubbed, “The King of Dumb.” Was there any truth to it? Hardly; it was simply politics.

Twenty-odd years later, when the Congressman died, a major magazine ran his obituary and said of him, he “was selected ‘dumbest Congressman,’ by 200 Congressmen, journalists and lobbyists.” It seemed the world had learned the truth about this man. Or had it? Later, that young journalist admitted that he’s ashamed, not because he was necessarily wrong, but because he didn’t much care if he got it right. He writes, “That was the nature of corruption, and it was especially invidious because it was born of motives that felt so pure.”

It is also the nature of gossip, slander, and back-biting. Nothing good comes of it; only evil is its result. Back-biting is the “utterance in the presence of another person of a false statement damaging to a third person’s character or reputation.” Slander is when a person “spreads scandal, tells secrets, etc.” Whispering is synonymous with backbiting but done in secret.

God positively condemns having such an attitude toward others (whether found in word or in pen). “You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:16). “Whisperers” and “backbiters” are listed among such sins as “fornication,” “murder,” and “haters of God” (Rom. 1:29-30). Slander is of the devil; indeed, that’s exactly what “devil” means – the slanderer.

Having such a gutter mouth hurts at least three people: 1.) the back-biter. It keeps him from loving and forgiving him whom he has elected to “backbite” and ultimately will keep him out of heaven (Psa. 15:1-3); 2.) the slandered – it hurts his reputation (Prov. 18:8). In fact, that’s why Satan uses it. If he can slander the character of the saint, he’ll go a long way in destroying his reputation. 3.) The third person is hurt – his view and impression of the slandered is destroyed or at least altered (Prov. 16:28).

It is a horrible fate that awaits one who sins so presumptuously. Let us make sure that we ourselves refuse to yield to such a temptation. Before we repeat a matter, let us ask ourselves three questions: Is it true? If it is not or you are not sure, drop it. If it is true, ask yourself, is it good? If it is true and good, by all means, tell it! If it is true, but not good, then ask yourself, is it necessary? Also, let us refuse to have “gutter ears.” If someone insists on sinning in such a way, let us not be a party to the matter – refuse to listen.
