No solicitors

This will be the last post till 2/10.  Thank you for your understanding.

Frequently as you knock on doors to invite neighbors to study God’s Word with you or to invite them to worship, you see a sign on their door – “No solicitors.” I have knocked on doors in half a dozen states and you see these signs from time to time. When we held a Gospel meeting in Potsdam, New York, we saw “No Jehovah’s Witnesses” on the door. Since I’m not a “Jehovah’s Witness,” I knocked on the door. This has been nearly 19 years ago but I do not recall someone which such a sign on the door being rude to me.

But if there is a “No solicitor” sign on the door, I normally would skip that door. They may only have in mind door-to-door salesmen. But they may also have in mind folks with religious intent. I’m not too fond of having my own door knocked by Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormons. I’ve studied with them – especially Mormons – and not found them to be very open to actual Bible study. The few JWs I have studied with seem likewise narrowly focused on their own doctrine and not keen on actually opening the Bible itself.

“No solicitor” – it’s a good way to keep religious folks out of the living room and out of your life. So, I oblige and normally skip such houses.

But this past Monday, I had a Bible study with a man with such a sign on his door. There is a good possibility that we have more. What was the difference? In two words – a heart attack.

Unfortunately, he has to meet loss of sexual desires. viagra viagra Speedy, simple baby sitting support, correct? Correct! This man is a member of a family of Christians here. I knew him before and had had small talk with him. When he had a heart attack, his family called me. I visited the hospital as he was having quadruple by-pass surgery. A few days later, I saw him again in the hospital.

As many serious, life-threatening health issues do, a heart attack can make you reassess your life and your relationship with God. That’s what we are praying is going on in the heart (mind) of this man. So, he is, at least a little, more open to discussing spiritual matters.

Jude writes: “have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh” (22-23).

Satan is good at putting up obstacles that deter an individual from thinking spiritual thoughts and giving their lives in commitment to Christ. Christians need to be patient. We need to pray. We need to keep our own hearts open to the whispering cries of the lost. We need to serve. We need to visit. Then we need to open our mouths – “Would you be interested in studying the Bible with me?”
