Saved by the cross of Christ

IT IS AT THE END OF THE LORD’S LIFE WHERE WE ENCOUNTER THE “CROSS.”

a)    The cross of Christ is a major Bible theme; all roads in the Bible lead to the cross, the act which allows man to be saved.
b)    Some think that one out of every 53 verses in the Bible makes a specific reference to Jesus’ death.

2)    When the world looks at the cross it often sees things the Bible does not see or emphasize.
3)    God sees the cross in much different terms – the cross was a payment for sin and the redemption of sinners.
4)    The cross is God’s power to salvation.
5)    Rom. 5:9 says “being justified by His blood” (the blood shed on the cross).
6)    Jesus is the “propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn. 2:2); the offering for sin was made on the cross.
7)    Col. 1:20 says Jesus has “made peace through the blood of His cross” (Col. 1:20).
8)    This is why Paul told people “we preach Christ crucified” (1 Cor. 1:23).
9)    “Crucified” in 1 Cor. 1:23 is expressed with the perfect tense.
a)    This means Jesus was crucified in the past, but the benefits of the Lord’s death continue.
b)    When we think of Jesus, we should think of Him as the crucified one.
c)    Crucified is an on-going description for who Jesus is.
10)    If the death of Jesus is such a central part of the Bible (and we have shown that this is true),
11)    And Jesus’ death is the only basis on which we can have forgiveness of sins,
12)    And the memorial we have to remember Jesus and the cross experience is the Lord’s Supper,
13)    Why in the world would we partake of the Lord’s Supper once a year?
14)    What about remembering what is perhaps the most important point in the Bible twice a year?

16)    What about once a month?  This also will not be enough.
17)    If the death of Christ is central to our salvation, we want to remember it when we assemble for worship.
18)    Sunday is the appointed day for worship – it is the “Lord’s Day” (Rev. 1:10).
19)    The Lord’s Day (Sunday) comes once every seven days.
20)    On that seventh day (the “first day of the week”), we have the “Lord’s Supper.”

BECAUSE OF THE CROSS, THERE IS “THE CHURCH.”

a)    Without the cross there could be no New Testament church.
b)    In Acts 20:28 Paul said Jesus “purchased the church with His blood.”
c)    Some say the church does not matter.
d)    Others say one church is as good as another.
2)    Jesus does not say these things.
3)    Jesus thought enough of the church to buy it.  The purchase price was His blood.
4)    Jesus went to the cross for the church.
5)    Those who bad mouth the church or say it is not important are going to anger the Lord.
a)    Jesus purchased His church and the purchase price was His blood (Mt. 16:18; Acts 20:28).
b)    Jesus is the one who controls this spiritual property.  He is the owner.  He makes the rules.
1)    Jesus died for us, and we want to live a life that pleases Him.
2)    The cross compels Christians to live a faithful life.
