Light versus darkness

1)    In Mt. 4:6 there is a statement about people “sitting in darkness.”
2)    When people are in the darkness of sin, they are in a bad place.
3)    Jesus came to be the “great light” – He came to take away the darkness.
a)    Mt. 6:23– READ
b)    Jesus said a person can be “full” of the “darkness.”
c)    This same verse says this darkness can be “great.”
4)    Mt. 8:12 – READ
5)    If we live in the darkness on earth, Jesus said we will inherit darkness for eternity.
6)    An interesting cross reference for Mt. 8:12 is Mt. 25:30.
7)    There Jesus said the “unprofitable servants” will be cast into the darkness.
8)    The darkness described in the Bible is a powerful force.
9)    Lk. 22:53.  If we do not actively seek light, the power of the darkness will get us.
a)    Rom. 3:10 says “none are righteous.”  Verse 23 says, “all have sinned.”
b)    Jn. 3:19.
10)    Paul told the people in Rom. 13:12 to “cast off the works of darkness.”
11)    For most, this is a difficult thing to do.
12)    1 Cor. 4:5 refers to the “hidden things of darkness.”
13)    Others may not know the dark things people do, but God knows about the works of darkness.

c)    In Mt. 5:16 Jesus said “let your light shine before men/”
2)    God’s plan for man is to have the “entire body full of light” (Lk. 11:34).
a)    This is how Jesus lived, Jn. 1:4 – Jesus Christ was the “light of men.”
b)    Jesus was the light that “shined in the darkness” (Jn. 1:5).
3)    Jn. 3:21 says those who “do the truth come to the light.”
a)    Those who love God “turn from darkness to the light” (Acts 26:18).
b)    Eph. 5:8 tells us to “walk as children of light.”
c)    If we “walk in the light” we have fellowship with God (1 Jn. 1:7).
d)    In Mt. 7:13-14 Jesus said the way of light is “narrow” and only a “few” choose it.

4)    As we go through life we need to think about being a child of the light.
