1)    If we had lived back in the time of Jesus, the apostles, and the first Christians, what w/life have been like?
a)    The Bible tells us we would have lived in a very special time.
b)    Gal. 4:4 says Jesus was sent into the world when the “fullness of time” had come.
2)    One of things that people in the first century experienced was a centralized government.
3)    The book of Daniel said a kingdom (government) would be in power when it was time for the Lord to come.
a)    Because of Rome’s power and influence, there was a great state of peace.
b)    Trying to spread the gospel in a time of war and chaos is typically difficult.
4)    The Roman government predicted by Daniel also allowed the world to have a common money standard.
5)    Along with peace and common coinage, Rome had roads – excellent roads.
6)    In the ancient world there was a lot of social injustice; prejudice was a common problem.

b)    The person who had been looked down on was being offered hope.
7)    Under Roman control taxes were high and this was a problem.
8)    The gospel came into a world where people wanted and were looking for hope.

10)    Marriages were civil contracts that could be torn asunder by either party.
11)    The gospel came along & people were told about God’s plan–one man, one woman, for life.  Mt. 19:9.
12)    Divorce and remarriage are permitted under very limited circumstances (Mt. 19:9).
13)    Abortion was commonplace and a regular procedure among doctors.
14)    Sickly children were sometimes drowned at birth.  Healthy children lived or dad based on what dad wanted.
15)    Suicide was regarded as a way to escape from the problems of this life.

1)    For a time people abided by what God wanted them to do to live the Christian life.
2)    Beginning next week we want to look at some of these doctrines.
3)    For today we want to turn our attention to some of the religious beliefs in the first century.
4)    Christianity was by no means the first religion in human history.

THE ROMANS HAD THEIR PAGAN AND HEATHEN RELIGIONS, BUT THE PEOPLE KNOWN AS THE JEWS ALSO HAD THEIR FAITH FROM THE LAW OF MOSES.

1)    The Jewish people had been given the “oracles of God” (Rom. 3:2).
2)    The Jews drifted from what God said.  Mt. 15:6, 9, 24
3)    Pharisees – people who often added to God’s law.  Mt. 23:24-.
4)    The Sadducees subtracted things from God’s laws – Acts 23:8.
5)    Essenes; Zealots.
6)    First century Judaism was a time of great religious division.
7)    Mk. 6:34 – people who were like sheep w/out a shepherd.
8)    A quick overview of the first century world tells us Gal. 4:4 is exactly right.
9)    Jesus came into the world at just the right time.
10)    He is still what we need for our time.
11)    Is His way our way?
