The Gold Standard

The media has rarely – if ever – been unbiased. As early as 1798 in our country, President John Adams signed into law the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Sedition Act was supposed to prosecute those who engaged in sedition against the government. Federalists – like John Adams – liked the law. The Republicans did not like it, especially after ten were convicted of violating the act. Most of those were newspaper editors who had been criticizing the president.

A couple decades later, newspaper editors who favored Henry Clay for the office of president ran scurrilous reports about Andrew Jackson’s relationship with Rachel. She was supposedly still married when they married one another. Plus, during the War of 1812, supposedly, Jackson had killed some men in cold blood. Newspaper editors who supported Clay were not concerned about truth. They were concerned about politics.

More recently, do you know the story behind the writing of The Wizard of Oz? Many movies began as criticism of contemporary society or culture. Such is the case with The Wizard of Oz. It is an allegory about American’s financial system back in the late 1800s.

During the 19th century, prices fell by 23%. Farmers in the west hurt while their bankers in the east benefited. Many Americans believed the solution was the free coinage of silver – at a time when the U. S. was still on the gold standard. Coining silver, as well as gold, would have increased the money supply and, thereby, driven up prices. The big political debate in the 1890 Presidential election was on abandoning the gold standard and/or coining silver.

L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz, was a journalist in the west and sympathized with the farmers. The characters of his story represent the major personages in the political debate. As you know, Dorothy (the American people) does not find her way home simply by following the yellow-brick road. Ultimately, the Wizard (Mark Hanna, the chairman of the GOP at the time) cannot help Dorothy but her (originally) silver slippers do!

The media has rarely – if ever – been unbiased. But the gold standard ought to always be the truth. There is truth – objective, unchangeable truth – in every field. The wise man said, “Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding” (Prov. 23:23). If the truth supports the Democrat Party, Christians should support the truth. If the truth supports the GOP, Christians should support the truth. Sometimes, the truth comes out of the mouths of people who otherwise teach error. But the truth is the truth.

That’s why it is our gold standard. It does not change because it flows from the nature and mind of God. “Forever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89; KJV).
