The greatness of God

God is Great

The primary purpose of the plagues God brought on Egypt was for God to make Himself known. It was not primarily to free the Israelites, but for God to make Himself – to make His name – known to Israel and to Egypt.

God made His power know in three ways: Over humanity, Over nature, Over other gods. Let’s take a look at each of these…

GOD IS GREAT OVER HUMANITY:
Let’s start with 4:11. God assures Moses that He made Moses as he is and therefore He can enable him to carry out His calling.

We see this point also illustrated in 14:4. Back in 5:2, Pharaoh had said he did not know the Lord. The word “know” runs like a thread through this whole section of Exodus (5-15). God is going to remedy that situation! Pharaoh will wish he had not said that! The purpose of calling the plagues “signs” (7:3; 8:19; 10:1-2) is that they signified the power of God.

GOD IS GREAT OVER NATURE:
Thinking about the plagues, how does God demonstrate unambiguously that He is in charge of their occurrence and intensity? If you take a look at some of the passages (7:19-20; 9:10; 9:23; 10:13; 10:22), He shows that He knows when the plagues will start and when they will stop.

Precise prophecy about the plagues demonstrate the LORD’s control (8:9; 8:23; 9:5; 9:18; 9:29)  God also controls nature in making a distinction between His people and Pharaoh’s people: 8:22-23; 9:26; 10:23; 11:7; 12:23.

All these signs point to God as the creator and sustainer of the natural order. When you get to the end of the plagues, there is hardly any animals, vegetation, and considerably fewer people. Egypt may have been the world power, but God crippled them considerably.

GOD IS GREAT OVER OTHER GODS:
The idea that the plagues were to show God’s power over the idols of Egypt is only explicitly made in 12:12. The Egyptians looked at the Pharaoh himself as a “god”, although Moses does not so attribute him in Exodus. So, any victory over Pharaoh is also a victory over a god.

Here are some implications of God’s control over each of these entities:

1.     God has authority over Egypt.
2.     Pharaoh and his armies and his magicians were absolutely helpless to save their own people, their own land, and to control the God of the Israelites. On the other hand, God can control them.

How does this study affect your view of God? In what way may you be encouraged in your Christian walk by considering that God is great?
