The Islamic View of Women

We have looked at several Islamic teachings in the last few months. One of the most widely despised practices is their view of women. Not too long ago, a young girl was shot in the head by the Taliban in Afghanistan because she tried to encourage education among females. In the interest of being fair to their religion, what do they officially teach?

Clearly, Muslims believe men have the leadership role in the family – “Women in turn are responsible for looking after their husbands’ comfort and well-being, guarding their honor and administering their properties…” (Haneef, 113).

Muslims practice polygamy – “in order to provide a home and maintenance for every woman in the society and …to make provision for other special situations…” (Haneef, 115). This finds support in the Qur’an itself: “And if ye are apprehensive that ye shall not deal fairly with orphans, then, of other women who seem good in your eyes, marry but two, or three, or four; and if ye still fear that ye shall not act equitably, then one only…” (Surah, 4:3). A woman may specify in a pre-nuptial contract that the husband will only practice monogamy.

More from the Qur’an: “Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God hath gifted the one above the other… Virtuous women are obedient, careful during the husband’s absence… But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourge them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great!” (Surah 4:38).

Ibn Warraq, author of Why I am Not a Muslim, writes that Islam is the reason Arabic women are repressed and their religion is a major obstacle to their upward movement in society.  He cites Qur’an verses for support (4:117, 53:21-22, 53:27; 2:228, 2:282, 4:11 & 4:34). He says the hadith also degrades women and this view is perpetuated by Muslim theologians.

With some surprising clarity, Esack writes: “In social and legal matters it is very difficult to avoid the impression that the Qur’an provides a set of injunctions and exhortations where women, in general, are simultaneously infantilized and ‘pedestalized’ – to be protected, and economically cared for by men, but also admonished and punished if they are disobedient” (180).

As with all aspects of Christianity, a Christian woman lives at the highest level of honor, respect, responsibility toward God, and service in the church of our Lord. No false religion can improve on God’s vision for the woman.
