The truthfulness of God

God Is Holy & True

Two young girls were talking and one said she had ten pennies. The other girl looked at her hand and only saw five. She said, “You only have five pennies.” The first girl replied, “I have five and my father told me he would give me five more tonight. So I have ten.”

She understood that her father’s promise was as good as done.

Thus we begin our study on the truthfulness of God as it flows from the holiness of God.

Holy is defined as “dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose.” The English word actually comes from the German, heilig, which means “whole.”

I do not believe we can list the attributes of God in any kind of order as if God is slightly more of one than He is of the other. But, if we were to define “holiness” in a metaphysical way, rather than a moral way, then it would define God as being “wholly” other, completely different from everything else in the universe. If that were its primary definition, then we might say that it is also His fundamental attribute because God is fundamentally different from mankind.

True is defined as “in accordance with fact or reality; accurate or exact; loyal or faithful.” A number of ideas are related to “true/truth:” firm, stable, faithful, reliable, correct, truthful, dependable, upright, real.

God is truth by His very nature. Human beings can have truth or know truth but only God can be truth.

God is true in the sense that He is real, as opposed to false gods (John 17:3). He is also true in the sense that He always speaks the truth and cannot lie (Heb. 6:18). Again, He is true in the sense that He is always faithful, dependable, trustworthy (2 Tim. 2:13).

You are, no doubt, familiar with Leviticus 10:1-3. If not, read the text quickly. We do not know exactly where these priests were supposed to get the fire for their incense. The presumption is that it was to be obtained from within the tabernacle grounds, likely from the altar of burnt offering (Lev. 16:12). But the text is clear that they did not have authority for the fire or coal which they did obtain.

I want to particularly draw our attention to verse 3. Here is the great reformer, John Calvin, commenting on this event:

If we reflect how holy a thing God’s worship is, the enormity of the punishment will by no means offend us. Besides, it was necessary that their religion should be sanctified at its very commencement; for if God had suffered the sons of Aaron to transgress with impunity, they would have afterwards carelessly neglected the whole Law. This, therefore, was the reason of such great severity, that the priests should anxiously watch against all profanation (2:431).

The point is that we cannot respect the holiness of God if we do not respect, honor, and submit to His truth. We see the same point made in the sin of Moses recorded in Numbers 20:12.

We should, then, stand in awe of His holiness and respect it by teaching His truth, living His truth (in holiness – Heb. 12:14), and honoring His truth.
