Things Christians need to watch

Words to live by: Watch

JESUS TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES ABOUT THE NEED TO BE WATCHFUL IN MANY PLACES, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS THE 24TH CHAPTER OF MATTHEW.

24:37-47 – READ

    1. Jesus said Noah’s contemporaries “ate and drank.” They planned weddings.
    2. Life seemed so ordinary verse 39 says those outside the ark were caught off guard.

In our daily lives there are times when we should have been watchful, we failed to do this, and all was ok.

  • In verse 37 of Mt. 24 Jesus said His next and final coming will be “as” or “like” the time of Noah.
    1. If people in the time of Noah failed to watch, guess what will be true at the end of time?
    2. Jesus promised most will also be “watching” (focused on) all the wrong things.
  • Based on what we find in Mt. 24, we have a good idea of what people will be “watching” at the end of time.
  • Some will be “watching” things associated with an upcoming wedding.

IF WE FAIL TO WATCH OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF OUR LIFE, GOD CERTAINLY WILL NOT FAIL TO WATCH IT.

After referring back to Noah verses 37-39 we find Jesus discussing the consequences for not being watchful.

  1. Verses 40-41 speak about two men and two women; the Lord said half these people were “taken” and the others were “left.”
  • This does not refer to some type of future “rapture.”
  1. The “two women” and “two men” in verses 40-41 are an illustration of close relationships.
    1. The word “left” is another way of describing condemnation (hell).
    2. When the Lord returns two good and close friends may not have the same eternal home.
  • Because some will be “left” (condemned), we need to “watch” and thus be ready – verse 42 – READ
  1. Verses 40-42 build on the illustration from Noah’s life in verses 37-29.

Rather than be a “watchful” and prepared Christian, some hope to wait till the last minute.

  • This “last minute” may be “after the kids are raised,” “after I retire,” or “just before I die.”
  • To these and similar mindsets the Lord says (verse 43): I have an illustration for you (thief).
  • In verse 44 Jesus tells us HE will come when people are thinking He is NOT about to come back.

WE CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS FAITHFUL, WISE, AND AMONG THE BLESSED BY GOD.

We also find this in verse 47 for those who are watchful and prepared: – READ

  • God wants to bless us – His creation – for all eternity.
    1. If being watchfulness is hard for us, perhaps we can find some motivation in Mt. 24.
    2. Verse 48 – READ
  • Verse 49 – READ

Verses 50-51 – READ

  • Failing to “watch” as the Bible describes will place us on the same level as the hypocrites.
  • 21:36 – Jesus said “watch at every season.”
  • When it comes to living the Christian life, we should try to be on guard every moment of every day.
