Was Adam a type of Christ?

1. In Heb. 10:1 we are told that the “law” was a “shadow” of the things to come.
2. This statement means things in the Old Testament had some symbolic meaning.
3. Many things and people in the Old Testament pointed forward to something greater in the Christian age.
4. Even the first human – Adam – pointed to Jesus (1 Cor. 15:45).
LET’S THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE NUMEROUS COMPARISONS BETWEEN JESUS AND FIRST PERSON TO LIVE ON PLANET EARTH.

a) Jesus said He would “build His church” (Mt. 16:18). This church is later discussed in places like Eph. 5.
b) Adam received a physical bride; Jesus received a spiritual bride.
9) Today there are people who say the church is unimportant or one church is as good as another.
10) Adam had only one wife; this truth pointed forward to something: Christ has only one church.
11) If people would realize that Adam foreshadowed Jesus, they would understand the singleness of the church.
a) When did Adam receive his bride (Eve)?
b) Gen. 2:21-24 – READ. Adam had to experience a “deep sleep” before He received his bride.
c) When did the Lord receive His bride, the church? Acts 20:28 says Jesus “purchased the church with His blood.”
d) Adam just went to sleep for a while; Jesus multiple days in a grave to purchase His bride.
12) We read about Adam losing a rib.
13) This part of the Genesis account also points towards the church that Jesus purchased with His blood.
14) Rev. 5:9 – READ.

22) When we study the information the Bible gives us about Adam, we find that He was the head of his wife. Gen. 3:16.
a) If Adam was the head of his wife, we should be able to draw a conclusion about Jesus.
b) The church is Christ’s bride, so it would seem perfectly logical that Jesus is the head of the church.
c) Col. 1:18 says the Lord is the “head of the body, the church.”
23) As Adam was the head of his one wife, so Jesus is the head of the one church He built.
24) Our next parallel, which comes from Gen. 5:1-2..
25) Notice the middle of verse 2 – “and called their name Adam.” Eve was called by her “husband’s name.”
26) If we are part of Jesus’ bride the church – we should be called after our “husband’s name.”
27) If we use the name “Christian” (Acts 11:26), we will be called after our husband’s name.
a) What about those who choose to call themselves after the name of some religious leader?
b) What if we refer to ourselves by a religious act such as baptism?
28) As Eve was known by her husband’s name, so we must be called by the Lord’s name to please Christ.
