What does God want Me to Do?

That is a question many young people – and some middle-aged folks – ask themselves. Or, “What is God’s will for my life?” On one hand, we know what God’s will is – His will is that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4).

But on an individual basis, what does God want me to do? What is His will for my life? The answer to this question is not always clear. God created each of us in a unique way with our own abilities, talents, likes/dislikes, skills, etc. In our own unique way, we reflect a small aspect of the nature of God. Boys and girls who like math reflect the fact that God likes math. He designed the world mathematically. Boys and girls who like words and languages do so because God is the Great Communicator. He likes words and languages; He designed them. So, on one hand, God guides us along a certain path based on how He created and designed each of us.

On another level, there is a principle that we call the “Open Door” principle. To illustrate this principle, let me bring to your mind Acts 16:6-10 as Paul and Silas and Timothy move along their second mission trip. In verse 6, the mission team wanted to go preach the Gospel in Phrygia and Galatia.  That is a noble goal. In fact, didn’t we just point out that God wants all men to be saved? Wouldn’t the Holy Spirit want this mission team to do that very thing? No.

Luke writes they were “forbidden by the Holy Spirit” to preach in Asia. So, the mission team went to plan “B.” This was to preach in Bithynia. Again, wouldn’t you think that God would be in agreement with that idea? After all, man must hear the Gospel to be saved and someone must preach it (Romans 10:14-15). Yet, again, the “Spirit of Jesus did not permit them.”

God was closing the doors as He led Paul and his mission team where He wanted them to go. They ended up in the city of Troas, where they received a vision that called them into Macedonia. At that point, they concluded they needed to preach the Gospel in Europe and subsequently set sail.

The principle of the “Open Door.” Many young men and women have had the desire in their heart to go to the mission field. But they found a closed door followed by a closed door. It can be discouraging to think that you are doing the Lord’s work – wanting to serve the Lord in a specific and highly needed way – but the doors seem to close.

But what we have to remember is that God knows what is best. God knows where each of us needs to be and what each of us needs to do. If we put His written will (the Bible) first in our lives, God will help us use our talents and abilities to the highest extent possible, where He knows we can be of most use to Him. Trying to peer into the future usually leaves us baffled and confused. But looking in the rearview mirror, often we can see how God was leading down the right path through doors that He opened for us.

Relative to going to Troas, Paul told the Christians in Corinth that God had opened a door for him “in the Lord for the gospel of Christ.” Paul asked the Christians in Colossae to pray for open doors for him (4:3).

I pray for open doors for you. That you may go where God wants you to go and serve Him through your own talents and skills in the way He has planned for you.
