Matthew 13:45-46

The Lone Ranger Flop

While we were in Romania, the missionaries and some national Christians went to the theater and saw The Lone Ranger. We all enjoyed the movie. When I was a young boy, I loved the Lone Ranger. I was in the “Lone Ranger” fan club, complete with certificate, badge, and mask. I watched Clayton Moore every Saturday. The series changed to animation at some point and I watched it too. I currently have a few Lone Ranger episodes on DVD and an original book, The Lone Ranger and Tonto by Fran Striker, copyrighted in 1940. Striker wrote the original radio series.

This Lone Ranger movie was not the Lone Ranger I watched as a child. It could not be. Johnny Depp was the star of the movie and he was not the Lone Ranger. If you put a star like Johnny Depp in the role of a “supporting character” – Tonto – it is not going to be the same movie we watched as a child.

I understood that when I went to the movie in Romania. I knew that if Johnny Depp – “Captain Jack Sparrow” – plays Tonto, things were going to be different. I did not expect Depp’s Lone Ranger to be the Lone Ranger from my youth. Expectations made the difference. Was The Lone Ranger a good movie? I think so. Was it a good “Lone Ranger”? No. Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger was not much like Clayton Moore’s Lone Ranger.

And, by Hollywood standards, it will lose at the box office big time – somewhere between $160 and $190 million, according to entertainmentwise.com. Two months ago, before Depp’s Lone Ranger hit the box office, James Gadea wrote on policymic.com seven reasons why the movie would fail at the box office.

Personally, I think the movie lost big time because movie goers went, thinking they would see The Lone Ranger from their youth. The Lone Ranger was not the star of this movie. In fact, he was a little annoying, quite a bit naïve, and hardly worth the reputation of a legend. But, again, this movie was not about the Lone Ranger. It was about Tonto.

Spiritually speaking, there are a lot of religious “pearls” out there. Taken within themselves, they may be satisfying. But when you compare them to the original, they always come up short.

Jesus gives us this succinct parable in Matthew 13:45-46: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” There is only one pearl of great price – New Testament Christianity, embodied in the person of Jesus Christ and taught by His inspired apostles.

Paul warns that some will follow after “another” Jesus, teaching “another” Gospel, inspired by “another” Spirit – “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.  For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles” (2 Corinthians 11:3-5).

A church may hold high moral standards. A church may support the biblical pattern for the family. A church may proclaim the deity of Jesus. Yet, if it does not follow the complete pattern from Christ and His apostles, it is not the authentic church of Jesus Christ.

Don’t settle for less than the original
